The Vampire Sextette, edited by Marvin Kaye, isn't your usual collection of vampire stories. Each of the six novellas included in this anthology looks at the vampire mythos from a distinctly unique perspective. S. P. Somtow's graphic "Vanilla Blood" chronicles the trial of a backwoods high school boy accused of mass murder. The testimony of his best friend is as shocking as it is humorous. Nancy A. Collins revisits vampire slayer Sonja Blue in the erotic thriller "Some Velvet Morning," in which Sonja tracks down an ancient Contessa who must bathe in blood in order to survive. A woman trying to write a vampire novel gets caught up in her own story in Tanith Lee's poetic and surreal "The Isle Is Full of Noises." My personal favorite was Brian Stableford's "Sheena," a bittersweet love story about a Goth musician girl and an underemployed sociology graduate who meet while working at a call center. Fans of vampire fiction should thoroughly enjoy this diverse collection. Unlike most anthologies, The Vampire Sextette has no weak link -- all six novellas are masterfully written.
